Fremantle Markets is not just a collection of exciting shops and stalls and entertainment. With everything from fresh and interesting foods, to fantastic crafts, gifts and the fun of buskers and artists, it's a cultural experience rich in history and tradition.

No tourist visit to Fremantle would be complete without checking out this important part of WA heritage.

Sir John Forest laid the foundation stone on Saturday 6 November 1897. Since this time, the Fremantle Markets have developed a unique and vibrant identity. With a wide ethnic base built over many years of immigration, the markets not only play an important role in perpetuating WA's heritage and tradition, but offer a fantastic atmosphere and dazzling display of cultural richness.

Over 150 stalls are housed in a grand old Victorian building of such remarkable character that it was listed by the National Trust and Heritage Council in 1980.The precinct, which includes the Sail & Anchor Hotel, the Norfolk Hotel, the Warders Cottages and Scots Church, is also listed on the Commonwealth Government's Heritage Commission Registrar of the National Estate.

Fremantle Art Centre Displays up to 19th September Venue: Fremantle Arts Centre

Vera Möller , darkrooming
Vera Möller (VIC) creates an eerie and luminous installation in which over 3,000 components glow and oscillate. In what Möller has characterised as a ‘museum of fictional species’, strange, organic forms are withered and calcified, accentuating the alien qualities of nature. Informed by her studies in theology and microbiology, Möller’s fantastical work is simultaneously bathed in an atmosphere of decline while predicting the emergence of new aberrant life. Represented by Philip Bacon Galleries, Brisbane; Sophie Gannon Gallery, Melbourne; and Tim Olsen Gallery, Sydney

Mark Parfitt - Dream Bore
Inspired by the humble bore, Perth artist Mark Parfitt celebrates the life supply of more than 80,000 suburban backyards. His own bore made redundant, Parfitt seeks alternative uses for this Western Australian icon. Assuming the self-reliant mindset of so many ‘can-do’ homeowners, Parfitt converts his home-made bore into an underground garden. Dream Bore is a fond and humorous application of recycling and reinvention to this backyard staple. The garden is accompanied by his exploratory drawings and diagrams and an artists’ book by Jamie Macchiusi (WA) and Gemma Weston (WA). Parfitt is represented by Galerie Düsseldorf, Perth. Supported by the Janet Holmes à Court Artists’ Grant which is a NAVA initiative, mad e possible through the generous sponsorship of Mrs Janet Holmes à Court and through the support of the Visual Arts Board, Australia Council for the Arts

Nairn Scott, The Glomesh Project
Gold is the ultimate status symbol which resonates across history and all cultures. Valuable gold fob watches and lavish candelabra sit alongside gloriously cheap nick-nacks from the Two Dollar Shop. Meticulously printed on hand-gilded paper, Scott bestows an elegance on the enduring and the disposable, the real and fake. The playful interchange of Scott’s ‘pick-and-mix’ aesthetic exposes the folly of equating good taste with social status. Scott is represented by James Dorahy Project Space, Sydney

“Funny, irreverent, passionate and provocative” Sydney Morning Herald

True stories from the frontline.
Following hundreds of hours of interviews with international peacekeepers, aid workers and UN weapons inspectors, author Damien Millar has constructed a dynamic, engrossing and surprisingly funny new work.

Focusing on three people who have dedicated themselves to putting their lives at risk in aid of others, we visit the world’s most dangerous hotspots, from Rwanda to East Timor, Cambodia to Iraq.

This devastatingly powerful new play sees a cast of three playing over forty different characters in rapid-fire transformation. We are proud to bring this bold, fiercely intelligent and highly original new work of theatre to Western Australian audiences.

“Lively and entertaining” The West
“A bloody brilliant show…bloody funny” Fremantle Herald

Deckchair Theatre present the world premiere of Krakouer! written by Reg Cribb and based on Sean Gorman’s Brother Boys.

Mount Barker’s most famous sons, Jim and Phil Krakouer took the Australian football world by storm in the early 1980s. Their unique and anarchic brand of football, dubbed “black magic”, captured the imagination of the nation. This is the story of the challenges they faced in their rise to the top of their game; their skill, daring and resilience both on and off the sporting field, and the controversy and adversity that has met them throughout their lives.

In the 70’s no one could touch the Krakouers. Debuting into professional football with the ‘blue blooded’ Claremont, the boys propelled the Tigers to their first Grand Final in decades. In Melbourne they reached new heights with the mighty Kangaroos until injury and personal dramas undid their careers. But this is more than a tale of football prowess. This is about two ‘Brother boys’ who fought with and for each other against racial vilification, gambling addiction, an unforgiving legal system and personal tragedy.

Don’t miss out on this special return season, before our critically acclaimed and hugely entertaining production heads on a regional WA tour in 2010 and a national tour in 2011 supported by Country Arts!

Once upon a time, a little girl called Ruby Moon set off to visit her grandma at the end of the cul-de-sac. She never arrived.

Ruby’s parents spiral into suspicion as they search for answers to the haunting mystery. Their suburban street becomes a tangled web of intrigue. Behind bland front doors, eccentric neighbors are hiding crucial fragments of ruby’s story. Once their secrets start to unravel, Flaming Tree Grove will never be the same again.

Writer Matt Cameron brings magic to the stage with this fractured fairytale from the dark soul of suburbia. Always Working Artists presents this play for Western Australian audiences for the first time in a witty and theatrical
production.

The Blessing of the Fleet Fremantle Venue: Parade from St Patrick's Basilica to the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour and return. Celebration at the Esplanade Reserve.

The Blessing of the Fleet was first introduced to Fremantle by Italian migrant fishermen in 1948, it’s become an important annual event for the port, combining culture and history in a day of fun.

The Blessing of the Fishing Fleet is a well-established religious and civic tradition in the City of Fremantle. It is a reminder of the religious traditions of the Italian people, especially those from Molfetta and Capo d'Orlando.

Molfetta - on the south-east coast of Italy- is a sea port facing the Adriatic Sea. It has a large population of fishermen and is a very busy port. The people of Molfetta are very devoted to their patroness, Our Lady of Martyrs. The history of the devotion goes back to the twelfth century when Molfetta was a receiving depot or hospital where many wounded crusaders were brought from the holy war being fought in Palestine by the Christian crusaders. They brought with them paintings of the Madonna and child and told of the protection crusaders received on the battlefield when carrying the pictures.

On September 8th, 1948 the first Festival and procession was held with the help of the religious and civil authorities. At that time an icon was carried in procession because the statue had not been acquired. The Statue of Our Lady of Martyrs was crafted locally by Con Samson of Subiaco, and was paraded through the streets of Fremantle to the Fishing Boat Harbour, for the first time in 1950, and then taken out to sea aboard the fishing boat "Invincible" and the Fishing Fleet was blessed by Fr P. Abramo O.M.I. In 1952 the people of Capo d'Orlando, a town on the north-east coast of Sicily, gave the tiny statue of the Madonna of Capo d'Orlando to their fellow Sicilians in Fremantle. They were able to have the added protection of their own Patroness, especially as many miracles had been attributed to her. In 1954 the Madonna di Capo d'Orlando joined the Madonna dei Martiri in procession. Whilst the Madonna dei Martiri is carried by the men, the Madonna di Capo d'Orlando is carried by young women.

The Fremantle Festival is unique because the two statues which are carried in the procession are representative of the two towns from which the majority of our fishermen migrated. These two statues are housed in the Marian Chapel in the Basilica of St Patrick in Fremantle.

Fremantle Children's Fiesta - 2010 Venue: Samson Park, McCombe Ave, Samson

The annual Fremantle Children's Fiesta is a much loved community event that continues to grow from its humble beginnings in 1979.

This year the event will be held on Sunday November 7 at Samson Park (an area bordered by McKenzie Street and Sellinger and McCombe Avenues, Samson).

Through performances, workshops and hands-on, fun-filled activities the event educates, inspires and entertains children and their families.

More than 4000 smiling faces were welcomed to last year's fiesta held in the unique bushland setting of Samson Park and the City hopes to have just as many people involved this September.

The theme for this year's Fremantle Children's Fiesta will be biodiversity. It will be a good opportunity to learn about the importance of protecting, conserving and improving the different plants, animals and micro-organisms, and the overall ecosystems of which they are a part.

Samson Park is a fitting location for this event as it is the last parcel of remnant bushland of its kind in the Fremantle area. Amazingly the park supports over 50 different species of birds, 80 kinds of ants, more than 700 species of insects, bugs and spiders and in excess of 80 native plants, trees and shrubs.

Don't miss this fun-filled day of activities in which you will have the added bonus of learning how to encourage and preserve biodiversity in your backyard. See you there!
